Snow Leopard… steeped in myth and legend is now possible to seek. The rugged, wild lands of Mongolia is fast emerging as perhaps the best place to seek them. Here they can be found near areas accessible by four wheel drive vehicle and at only moderate elevations.  Seldom exceeding 8,000 feet elevation at the highest, we have a relatively comfortable Ger camp to return to each evening. We will spend a week immersed in their territory and with the help of our local trackers and guides, the odds of actually seeing one are excellent.

The sneaky and elusive Pallas’ Cat also inhabits the open spaces of Mongolia and for many is equally enticing.  A truly unique looking wild cat with an incredible pelage, we spend several days searching for them with good chances of connecting with them.

While seeking out the cats we can hope to see several other exciting mammals: the incredible Saiga, Argali, Siberian Ibex, Mongolia Gazelle and even Przewalski’s Horse. Birding is exciting in these habitats too and we could encounter White-naped Crane, Altai Snowcock, Mongolian Ground Jay and Pallas’s Sandgrouse. 

We will travel mainly by four wheel drive vehicle with lots of scanning and some enjoyable walks too, all while based at traditional Ger camps.  Almost the entire time we will be surrounded by some of the wildest open spaces remaining on our planet.  Mongolia beckons!

About this trip

Montana is stunning and Josh is a great guide. He knows the birds and all the secret spots to find them. The travel van was comfortable and accommodations ranged from very good to good as did restaurant choices. We were not in big urban areas so choices were obviously limited.

I have birded in the SW many times so didn't expect many new species, but was more than happy with my new woodpeckers, longspurs and the Sharp-tailed Grouse. Josh made sure we all got good looks and shared some special places we will always remember.

Excellent trip!  Good birding and sightseeing in Glacier Park and short grass prairies. Our very skillful and affable guides were also great educators and we learned a lot of new facts about local breeding birds. Food good and accommodations comfortable. Travel companions were sharing and fun.

This trip was exactly as described & more!  The bird-watching was incredible, the locations we went to each day were just gorgeous, the food we ate was delicious, and Mollee was amazing, extremely knowledgeable, and so helpful & patient with this novice birder! Almost Heaven: Birds, Nature, and Culinary Adventures in West Virginia

This tour was outstanding from start to finish. Mollee was an exceptional guide—knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and deeply attuned to the group’s needs and interests. Her expertise and easygoing style created a welcoming, engaging atmosphere every day. The itinerary was thoughtfully designed to showcase the best of West Virginia, from breathtaking birding spots to beautiful landscapes. The food was delicious, and the bird sightings were unforgettable. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience.

This was such a fantastic week! The landscapes were stunningly beautiful. The accommodations were great, the food was delicious, and Mollee did a fantastic job leading our crew! 

A truly great trip. Excellent planification, top notch accomodations and great meals everywhere. George and Kennedy are amazing guides, very knowledgeable of the area and always making sure everyone sees the birds and mammals. 
The itinerary is very well designed to ensure visits to key areas and covering a lot of ground without having to drive all the time. 

If you are looking for a safari in March-April, which to me seems the absolute best time to go there, Hillstar is a top choice. Would absolutely recommend without any hesitation. 

Tanzania: The Endless Plains & The Crater

Oh my goodness! Our trip to Tanzania was an amazing experience! Awe-inspiring moments came one after the other for the entire trip! Our guides were knowledgeable and generous. The accommodations and food were excellent. We saw over 400 species of birds and had close, respectful, and safe encounters with mammals. I’d do it all again if I could!

Very enjoyable, but a little daunting due to the high elevation and condition of the roads and the amount of non-birding time due to the logistics of travel between sites. Photographic opportunities were necessarily limited due to the types of habitat. But overall we had a great time, especially because of the support of the leader and the local teams.

Private Colombia Tour 2025 - Swartz

Great trip.  Eric Antonio Martinez and Joshua Covill are tremendous guides.  Couldn't have asked for better birds, practically swept all the available endemics in the region.  We had a great group too and excellent food.  Tour was well run.

Mexico: Oaxaca - Isthmus Endemics, 2025

Awesome trip: All the West Mexican endemics--check! Many other great birds, familiar and new--check! Finding three rarities for west Mexico, including a country first--check! Delicious food in the land of seven moles--check! Fascinating visits to a rug maker & coffee plantation--check! Joshua Covill and Eric Martinez are extremely knowledgeable about both birds and traveling in Mexico and were helpful in challenging situations, especially Josh. Thanks for an incredible experience!


This was my first international birding trip. I was very impressed with both guides. Eric and Josh were great at hearing the birds, IDing them and making sure we all got on the birds for the most part. Thanks to them we even got a Mexican first during our trip! The food/restaurants and cultural stops(Monte Albán, etc.) were also very good and informative. All and all a great intro to international birding for me. I will definitely travel and book again with Hillstar.

This was an amazing trip on many levels. Costa Rica and the locations we visited are beautiful, and rich in flora and fauna, including diverse bird populations, and the birding spots were well scouted in advance. We also saw monkeys, sloths, and other interesting and attractive mammals, amphibians, reptiles and insects including butterflies and moths. The leaders and local guides where knowledgeable, personable, and experienced leaders. I enjoy photographing birds, so it was great to have two highly skilled, professional photographers on the trip, including one of the leaders, Troy Bynum. The logistics were well planned. Nearly all the dinning venues offered tasty, satisfying cuisine served promptly including local favorites. The lodging facilities were top, notch comfortable and featured grounds with many attractive and/or native plantings that supported many birds. There were problems with the hot water in a few of our cabins at one the six places where we stayed, about the only notable lodging issue I was aware of. The number of travelers was small, so we could all chat with the leaders easily. The travelers on this trip were all fun to be with and included highly experienced birders as well. I feel that folks who are less experienced birders would have enjoyed this trip too. While none of our bird walks were particularly strenuous, several times we  were given options about where to bird. That way, those who wanted to walk less had a choice. The grounds of the lodging were extensive and featured good birding, so even if you decided not to take a bus trip to a remote location with interesting target species that day, you could still have a great day exploring the lush, attractive, bird-rich hotel grounds, which also featured other wildlife, e.g. monkeys or tree frogs. It was tremendous birding with George Armistead and Troy Bynum. I learned so much from them about birds and other Costa Rican wildlife!

Costa Rica with Wyncote Audubon, 2025

This was a trip of a lifetime for me. George Armistead just kept finding life bird after life bird for us. The accommodations were quite comfortable and food was always plentiful and local. The bus we travelled in was quite comfortable and the driver quite knowledgeable about driving on mountainous S-curves. I am looking for another Hillstar trip next year that fits my elderly needs. Well done, George!

Great trip with wonderful guides to see many different species of birds in the Canal Zone and Highlands of Panamá with Hillstar Nature. The Mount Totumas Lodge in the Cloud Forrest was amazing for the lodging, hospitality, food and the numerous hummingbirds and nesting Resplendent Quetzals on the property as well as award winning coffee grown there. The Los Quetzales Ecolodge and Spa was the opposite, unfortunately.

Panama: The Canal Zone & the Chiriqui Highlands

We had an incredible experience. Josh was friendly, personable, and extremely knowledgeable about not just birds, but other fauna and plant life in the areas we visited. Great, unique accommodations, amazing food, and incredible experiences in a wonderful country. I only wish we were still there!

Costa Rica: A Birder's Paradise 2025

This was a fantastic trip.  Josh had designed a superb itinerary, covering a variety of habitats and a wide range of species.  His skills are outstanding: hearing, seeing, and getting participants on the birds.  His knowledge of the taxonomy and distribution of the species is impressive.  Accommodations were mostly excellent, sometimes just adequate (there were no alternatives), but I never had a complaint.  The group was congenial and cohesive.  I'm so glad to have been part of this trip!

Hi George et al.  -  This feedback is for the recent back-to-back Choco and High Times tours with Mollee and Yesennia, as well as the "bonus" guides Josh and Manuela.   I have nothing but positive things to say.  The logistics, day-to-day communications, adaptive management, and birding expertise were all great.   This is despite our train and miner strike adventures on our day to/from San Cipriano, which I would visit again in a heartbeat.  I hope that stays on the tour.  It was great to meet, bird, and hang out with Mollee (the podcast creates an illusion that we know folks), but it's nothing like time together in the field.  Yesennia was incredible on the birding, organization, and hard work fronts.  Both she and Mollee have such great temperaments and can put up/take care of demanding customers (like me) with grace and ease.   They worked great together.  I first met Josh on the Santa Marta tour in Feb 2024 and it was great to bird with him a year later.   While he was great then, he seemed more comfortable as a guide and expert.   Manuela also seemed great, but I did not get as much direct time with her.   The lodging was all great the logistics seamless and I will recommend Hillstar without hesitation. Colombia: The Chocó & the Western Andes - 2025

This was my third trip to Colombia with Hillstar Nature, and I enjoyed just as much as the first two trips. I had the opportunity to visit the Tatamá National Park and stay at the Montezuma Rainforest Ecolodge. The Tapasco family extended their extensive knowledge  of the area as well as their hospitality. We were fortunate to have Yesennia Tapasco, along with Mollee Brown as our guides.
   From there we traveled to our three night stay at the Araucana Lodge. From there we visited Laguna el Sonso to bird the wetlands, lake, and forests where we saw a wide variety of birds including Horned Screamer, Lesser and Common Nighthawks, and Common Potoo with her baby.
    Our next visit was to see the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock at the Finca Doña Dora.In addition to seeing many of the Finca’s birds, we enjoyed a delicious breakfast and lunch. We were also treated to an overview of how Doña Dora and her family started  their Finca. They work very hard to maintain their business and extend their hospitality. Later that day we visited La Florida- Bosque de Las Aves and were able to see our target birds, Little Tinamou, and Chestnut Wood-Quail along with many other birds and hummingbirds of the area.
   Our last visit was to the town of San Cipriano where we were able to see Trogons, Motmots, Chocó Screech Owl, Tiny Hawk and many others.
   Our guides Yesennia, and Mollee as well as a great group of people made this a great trip and birding experience.


The High times in the the Cordillera birding adventure was spectacular. Accommodations were perfect, logistics were well handled. And our guides Mollee and Yessina were truly exceptional. Their expertise was over the top, extremely friendly and they are masters at finding birds and sharing information.

Colombia Santa Martas 2025

Hillstar Nature – A Truly Unforgettable Birding Adventure in Colombia’s Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and Coastal Region.

From the moment I stepped off the plane and saw a friendly face waving my name on a sheet of paper, I knew I was in for something special. Hillstar Nature’s guided tour through Colombia’s Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and coastal region was an experience beyond anything I could have imagined. From start to finish, I was completely taken care of—first-class accommodations, breathtaking landscapes, delicious meals, and warm, attentive service. And the Santa Marta sunsets? Absolutely second to none.

A huge thank you to our guides, Josh and Manuela, who went far beyond just being expert birders. Their passion, knowledge, and dedication elevated every moment of the trip, ensuring we didn’t just see birds but truly experienced them.

And, of course, the birds—the whole reason I joined the tour! Every day was packed with unforgettable sightings. From the thrill of catching even a fleeting glimpse of a Santa Marta Screech Owl to watching a Rufous-tailed Jacamar snatch butterflies in midair, to the stunning sight of a pair of Vermilion Cardinals feeding from a cactus—there were “wow” moments at every turn. The hummingbirds alone were worth the trip, with jaw-dropping views of so many dazzling species.

One of the standout moments was watching Jonus, one of the incredibly skilled local guides, give a play-by-play as a Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl found itself the target of an all-out mobbing by various songbirds. His enthusiasm and sharp eye made it feel like we were witnessing a live nature documentary.

Hillstar Nature delivered on every level, and I can fully and unreservedly recommend them to any birdwatcher or nature lover. If you want to be wowed, this is the trip for you!

Peru: The Coast, the Andes & Amazonia

This was an exceptional trip. I had close, personal experiences with endemic birds of Northern Colombia each day of the trip.  Our guide, Hugo, was energetic, knowledgable, and friendly! I loved the lodges we stayed at, especially Mountain House.  I'm vegetarian and the meals on the tour far exceeded my expectations - exceptional! I hope to go on more Hillstar adventures in the future!

Colombia: Sounds of the Remote North 2025

I had a terrific trip, well organized, extremely professional, helpful and felt well looked after at all times. Our guide Joshua made us feel like family, and had terrific local knowledge from his own personal travels in Costa Rica and beyond. He continues to maintain his professional services, after our departure! I found an omission on one of the bird lists, he sent out an updated, corrected bird list. Absolutely terrific! I would absolutely recommend Hillstar and Joshua without a second thought. Everything was amazing. 

Costa Rica: Amazing Introduction Tour

This December 2024 trip exceeded my expectations. Having been to Costa Rica before on a sight-seeing tour with my family, I expected this birding tour to be a good  -- but it was fabulous! Josh was an excellent guide, not only for his skill at IDing birds and getting everyone on them, but his exceptional skill at making everyone comfortable while keeping us on task. And Hillstar Nature's Costa Rican connections ensured we got all of the target birds rather quickly, and many, many more birds. And those connections couldn't be more gracious. A truly memorable trip.

Maine: Acadia’s Iconic Birds, Whales, and Scenic Views

Having never been anywhere this remote before, the outposts proved interesting. Getting to St. Paul Island is an adventure in itself and there were some wonderful birds there, especially at the seabird colony. Nome also proved to be an interesting place with great new birds and other wildlife. Although we hit a snag that kept us on St. Paul Island longer than expected, the group made it a fun delay. St. Paul Island was cold but we were warned of that well in advance and were well prepared. The accommodations in Nome were great, very good in Anchorage and fine on St. Paul Island. The food in general was good but could have been better on St. Paul Island - a limitation of being extremely remote I imagine. The guides were excellent - George and Alvaro are not only great birders but the nicest guys too. 

Alaska - Bering Sea Outposts:  St. Paul Island & Nome

A true adventure into a little-known environment. An eye-opening and enriching experience.  Hillstar was organized, accommodating, responsive, took care of all arrangements and details with the participants' interest at the foremost. Guides were extremely knowledgeable and well acquainted with the area..

Alaska - Utqiagvik:  The Northernmost Point in the US

The Seabird Cliffs at St Paul are a sight to behold and the island itself is a birding mecca. While our time in Nome was limited it was an amazing visit there. Additionally, I had an amazing visit to the Anchorage area besides birding St Paul and Nome as planned and that is because George and Alvaro worked diligently to maximize the birding opportunities the group had in all three of those areas. They are knowledgeable birders and teachers who are fun to be on a birding tour. It turned out to be a great trip if not exactly according to script.

The trip to Utiquiagvik was wonderful and fulfilled all of my expectation. The birding was as good as we could have hoped for with some wonderful, surprises, and amazing displaying nesting shorebirds. The eider show was great and getting out to the Point Barrow to see the Polar Bears was thrilling. George and Alvaro kept us moving and tracked down as many of the rarities as we could track down in our time there and it was the highlight of my time in Alaska with them.

With the dynamic duo of George Armistead and Alvaro Jaramillo, how could a trip get any better? Whether you’re chasing Asiatic vagrant birds or wishing to see shorebirds and jaegers on their breeding grounds, this is absolutely the trip for you. Not only are the guides extremely knowledgeable about finding and identifying birds, they also gave us some great scientific and cultural information. They were even helpful for those of us who were scared of tromping on spongy tundra.
Beautiful photographic opportunities exist, especially with the amount of golden hour light conditions in that part of Alaska near the summer solstice.
This was my very first experience on a group birding tour and it definitely didn’t disappoint. It definitely wasn’t what I expected, but in the end, it was quite enjoyable.

Great team - great group, and great trip. Two thumbs up, would do again!

Texas: Total Eclipse Birding

It was an amazing trip where we experienced all manner of natural wonders from a full solar eclipse to seeing 12 million bats pouring out of a cave to hundreds of great birds. 

Our guides, Whitney and Holly, really worked hard making sure we had the best chances of seeing the birds we were targeting, as well as making sure we ate it interesting and unique, local places. The amount of planning and replanning they did cannot be overstated.  They had a plan a, a Plan B, a plan C, D, E and F for just about every site, and sometimes we needed them!



Great experience. Friendly, knowledgeable, extremely helpful tour guides. Tour leaders didn’t just point out birds but provided excellent ornithological information about individual species + cues to identification. Willing + ready to pursue a “Plan B” if “Plan A” wasn’t working out. Nice added “side trips” to make sure group was getting the most out of the tour.  Good selection of eateries. 

This was an amazing trip!  Timed both with a total eclipse and spring migration in Texas. I loved it. The food, the snacks, the sights and of course the birds! We had over 180 species in the week with several rarities mixed in. The food was also great (maybe too good!) We also had a bonus stop at the Rio Frio Bat Cave, which was almost as awe-inspiring as the eclipse, 10-12 million bats leaving their cave at dusk was quite something to witness. The guides were awesome and were super organized. They were up to date on the birds in the region and were able to pivot our plans quickly when conditions changed. This was one of the best birding tours I've been on, I'd do another Hillstar trip in a heartbeat.  

This was a great trip for birding! We saw some fantastic birds including the quetzal, and Josh, our guide, was very knowledgeable about hotspots and how to see a variety of habitats. Costa Rica is an easy country to enjoy, with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, and the people are lovely. I highly recommend Hillstar and this Costa Rica experience!

Costa Rica: A Birder's Paradise

Costa Rica : Private 10-day trip with Josh Covill

Josh was an excellent tour leader.  He worked hard to assist members in our group with special dietary needs, as well as challenging mobility needs.  He has an amazing grasp of Costa Rica birds and their sounds, making sure we all got good looks at the birds. 
Our accommodations met our expectations, showcasing the diverse jungles, mountains and cloud forests of the country. 
I will hire Hillstar and especially Josh Coville for future bird tours.  

I really enjoyed the opportunity to be a guest in India. I was very privileged to be guided by experts  including George Armistead, Surya Ramachandran, and Harish Sharma who shared there extensive knowledge of the animals and other aspects of the wetlands. The wildlife viewing is phenomenal in Keoladeo National Park . 
The trip down the Chambal River was fantastic with great views of Gharial, Muggers, turtles and birds. The trip also included quick glimpses of river dolphin.


India: The Taj Mahal & Wondrous Wetlands

This was definitely a trip of a lifetime and has made me want to return to India with Hillstar Nature tours. 
   It was a chance to see a different diverse culture, enjoy the food, and the beautiful countryside and wildlife. I would recommend this trip to anyone who is curious, flexible, and loves the outdoors.

Overall a great trip! Hotels were spectacular, especially Termales del Ruiz. 
Our guides were among the best and the group was awesome.

Colombia: High Times in the Cordillera Central

Fantastic trip with an uber number of bird species observed every day. Top notch guides, Josh and Christian, were not only knowledgeable but patient and helpful to those of us with less birding experience. Choices of locations and places to stay were excellent. Working with indigenous guides added a great dimension to the trip. I highly recommend this trip to any avid birder! 


Colombia Santa Martas 2024

If you want to learn huge amounts about the birds, mammals, ecology, and culture of India - and have a total blast while doing it, THIS is the trip for you!  George Armistead is a gifted teacher.  He makes people at all levels of learning feel welcome and excited about what they're seeing.  Out in the field, he keeps up a regular commentary, naming birds and mammals as they're seen (are there any he can't identify?) and adding fascinating commentary from the world of ornithology.  The trip was organized to a T.  It's hard to make a trip like this go smoothly, but ours certainly did.  Manisha, our Indian guide, was a wonderful complement - extremely knowledgeable about birds and mammals, full of local information, and a great addition to the fun of it all.  Accommodations and food were outstanding.  Overall: 10 stars out of 5!

Jewels of Gujarat: A Safari in Western India

We really enjoyed the trip. The Asiatic Lion encounters were terrific. The birding was great, too. The accommodations were very nice and the staff at the lodges were wonderful. The food was delicious! Thank you, George, for a great trip!

We had a wonderful time. I never expected to have such great views and encounters with the Bengal Tigers. The birding opportunities were great, too. George and Surya were great leaders and the staff at the Lodges were so attentive and helpful. The accommodations were great, as was the food. A truly memorable trip!

Really enjoyed traveling and birding with the Hillstar team in Uganda. The local guides added a lot to our education and were friendly and open and knowledgable. I especially enjoyed the mix of birding and safari for the bigger African specialties.  Having two night stays at most of the guest houses and lodges was really helpful and some of the locations had amazing views that made a person want to stay back from the birding and just take in the land and skyscapes. A couple of the places made it necessary to employ noise cancellation technology at night because of street noise. There was plenty of food, almost too much! but not much variation, especially if you are vegetarian.  Luckily, at this time of year, the jeeps were comfortable enough without needing a/c! Our group of 9 had a combination of birders and photographers and it worked out nicely. Most of the parks and stops were very birdy and it was easy to add many lifers to your list. I would highly recommend this tour to serious birders.
